The Short Story:

Julia Flaherty has lived with type 1 diabetes (T1D) since 2004. She works in the diabetes space as a writer, editor, content marketing specialist, health coach, and advocate, focusing on creating clear, practical health content people can apply in their daily lives with diabetes.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Media and Communication from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point (UWSP). In 2019, Julia represented the U.S. and spoke to a crowd of 200+ at a Change.org All Team Retreat on the importance of insulin affordability and accessibility.

Julia is the Client Content Manager at Diabetes Nerd Marketing and has created over 1,000 blogs, articles, eBooks, white papers, and social media campaigns since 2015. She has held lead roles at organizations such as Beyond Type 1 and Edgepark Diabetes. She is a contributing writer for Beyond Type 1 and Type 1 Strong.

Julia is also a MindBodyGreen–Certified Health Coach (CHC) and Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)–certified through the National Council for Mental Wellbeing. She is completing her Functional Nutrition Certification through MindBodyGreen and will next complete the American Diabetes Association's (ADA) Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) Lifestyle Coach training.

Julia is the founder of Chronically You, which provides remote health and wellness coaching from the heart of the Fox Cities in Wisconsin for people with all types of diabetes. Julia is the author of the Rosie Becomes a Warrior children’s book series about type 1 diabetes, available in English and Spanish. She enjoys connecting with like-minded professionals and fellow community members in need of more compassion and understanding.

The Long Story:

As a CHC, I'm dedicated to helping people with all types of diabetes build sustainable habits and reconnect with their sense of self through practical tools, creative reflection, and compassionate accountability. My work is grounded in more than two decades of lived experience with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and a deep understanding of how chronic illness shapes daily life: physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Before founding Chronically You, LLC, I spent over a decade working in marketing and storytelling, mostly for purpose-driven health brands. Over this time, I've honed my ability to translate complex topics into clear, empowering messages.

That background now informs how I coach: blending strategy, creativity, and empathy to help people find clarity, confidence, and sustainable growth.

At my core, I believe change happens through curiosity, not perfection. Whether I’m coaching clients, writing for my blog, or developing wellness resources, my goal is the same: to help others feel more capable, calm, and connected in their own lives.

I live by a simple philosophy: leave it better than you found it, whether that’s a mindset, a message, or a moment.

Early Beginnings:

From Marketing to Mission-Driven Work

My career has taken me across industries—from fashion, beauty, and entertainment to publishing, medical supply distribution, nonprofits, and healthcare marketing. Each experience taught me how to adapt quickly, think strategically, and lead with creativity and care, especially when working with mission-driven teams dedicated to improving community and patient health.

I began my professional journey on the East Coast, collaborating with executives to refine marketing strategies, strengthen client relationships, and drive growth. Those early experiences shaped my approach: thoughtful, data-informed, and always people-centered.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of helping reimagine Love’s Baby Soft into Eau So Love’s for Dana Classic Fragrances—introducing influencer marketing before it was the norm—developing data-driven audience engagement at Wetpaint, and leading integrated marketing campaigns at Ledgeview Partners (now FORVIS), which contributed to its recognition as a Top Microsoft Partner. My work there earned the Brooke Webb Smith Memorial Award for collaborative leadership, innovating marketing, and process improvement.

One of the most meaningful chapters of my career began at Beyond Type 1, where I helped launch the organization’s first-ever National Diabetes Awareness Month (NDAM) campaign, resulting in record-breaking engagement and national visibility. That experience connected my personal and professional worlds, reaffirming my commitment to using storytelling as a force for diabetes advocacy and change.

Today, I use my experiences not only as a coach and storyteller but also as a patient advocate for people with diabetes and mental health conditions.

Along the way, I’ve written for outlets such as Her Campus, Insulin Nation, and Thought Catalog, and in 2019, I spoke internationally about the importance of insulin affordability and accessibility at a Change.org All Team Retreat to an audience of over 200 people. In 2021, I published Rosie Becomes a Warriora children’s book series created to empower kids with T1D and their families.

My Mission Today:

Support People with Diabetes 1-on-1

Today, as the founder of Chronically You, LLC, my work lives at the intersection of personal health, integrated creativity, and community-centered storytelling. I’m currently focused on growing the health and wellness coaching side of my business to support people living with all types of diabetes.

As a coach, I don’t provide medical advice or prescriptive guidance. Instead, I help clients build awareness, uncover their own motivations, and strengthen the habits that support their emotional well-being with diabetes—living life less in the extreme mindset and more in the stable middle ground.

I continue to provide content strategy services—including writing, editing, and content management—for brands that share my passion for meaningful storytelling and positive change.

At its core, Chronically You is about helping people and organizations connect more deeply—with themselves, their purpose, and the impact they want to create in the world.

Stories for empowerment. Marketing for purpose. Coaching for change.

If my story and business model resonate with you, I'd love to connect. Schedule a call and let's chat!
